Revive Your Face and Lift Sagging Skin in North Carolina
A facelift at Dilworth Facial Plastic Surgery is designed to address the changes that impact a face over time, including the loosening of connective tissues and volume loss that leads to sagging, particularly in the lower face and neck. As we age, a variety of environmental and genetic factors can lead to the development of folds, jowls, and pockets of fat that together give the face an unwanted older appearance.
Dr. Andrea Garcia and Dr. Joshua Surowitz are experts in facial rejuvenation who approach each patient as an individual with unique aesthetic goals and needs. While there are surgical steps typical to every facelift, each surgery is a customized procedure designed to provide a harmonious, natural, and refreshed look.
What Is a Facelift?
Also known as a rhytidectomy, the “facelift” is a regularly sought-after procedure in Charlotte. Facelift surgery is actually one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States each year.
Specifically, a facelift can eliminate mid-face sagging, deep creases, and jowls by tightening the tissues that have drooped. The careful application of liposuction can remove fatty deposits beneath the chin, and other fat can be repositioned. These changes will result in fuller cheeks, a more defined jawline, smoothing and tightening of the neck, and an overall look of youthfulness.
Note that a facelift does not alter skin tone, though a laser skin resurfacing treatment can complement the surgery by lightening the appearance of existing scars, reducing pore sizes, and more.
Also remember that while a facelift is ideal for tightening and lifting facial tissues, it does not stop time. Your face will continue to age, but it will do so from a new starting point, effectively turning back the clock by a matter of years.
Fellowship trained and board certified, Dr. Andrea Garcia and Dr. Joshua Surowitz focus solely on the highest quality techniques for rejuvenation of the face and neck, striving for natural-looking results that deliver a fresh, “unoperated” appearance.

What Is the Facelift Procedure?
Each facelift begins with the administration of an anesthetic, followed by careful placement of incisions that allow the doctor to access the targeted tissue while strategically hiding any resulting scars by keeping them as minimal as possible and disguising them under hair or camouflaging them in natural folds and creases. Typically, an incision runs from the temple, through the hairline, and around and behind the ear, though there are variations depending on the scope of the surgery. A small incision just under the chin is also commonly used.
The doctor will remove and reposition fat as necessary, lift and tighten the deep tissues, then gently redrape and tailor the excess skin.
A typical facelift is an outpatient procedure that can take three to four hours, considering the unique scope and individual variations necessary for a patient’s customized surgery. Technological advances and techniques refined by years of careful study and practical application have reduced the procedure’s invasiveness, as well as the necessary post-procedure downtime, making it one of the safest cosmetic surgery options available today.
Since a facelift involves anesthetics, patients should have a friend or family member take them home after their facelift to help ensure their safety and proper aftercare, starting with light compression applied immediately after surgery.
What Will Post-Facelift Recovery Be Like?
Dr. Garcia and Dr. Surowitz will examine the results upon removing the dressing 24 hours after the surgery, at which point they will also provide more detailed instructions, including how to properly care for and clean the incision sites, around which there will likely be bruising and swelling for seven to 14 days. Patients should expect their sutures to stay in for approximately a week, and any staples in the hairline to stay for three to five days beyond that.
During this recovery time, it is important that the patient rest and heal, typically for one to two weeks, aided by cool compresses and prescribed medications as necessary. During this time, facelift patients may notice that the treated area and their earlobes feel numb, but this sensation is common and temporary.
About 10 days after surgery, patients can begin any makeup and skincare regimens again.
What Does a Facelift Cost?
While a facelift is a specific surgical procedure, there are numerous variations that impact its scope for each patient. The cost of your unique facelift will depend on your particular surgery. Cost is best discussed at your consultation, when the doctor can determine the extent of work necessary for you to achieve your aesthetic goal and answer any questions you may have.
Looking for More Than a Facelift in North Carolina?
While the facelift improves the youthfulness of the lower face and neck, the upper face and eyes are also commonly affected by natural aging processes. As such, patients frequently combine procedures such as browlift or eyelid surgery to rejuvenate these areas. Together, these procedures can provide an overall refreshed appearance, so the youthful difference isn’t restricted to one area.
Some patients wish to focus solely on a particular region, which is why Drs. Garcia and Surowitz offer the mid facelift as a standalone surgery that targets the cheeks. Patients who have a well-defined jawline, but who want to get rid of sagging higher on the face, may choose this procedure, which also requires less down time for recovery.
Patients can also opt for cheek or chin enhancement, lip augmentation, or a rhinoplasty, as well as fat transfer to add volume where it is needed and complement facelift results. Talk to the Dilworth Facial Plastic Surgery team about how the various compatible options may be combined or spaced apart for maximum cosmetic results and safety.
Temporary, nonsurgical options for facial rejuvenation include BOTOX® injections, which smooth out fine wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and on the outside of the eyes (known as crow’s feet), as well as chin wrinkles and neck bands; and dermal fillers that replenish lost volume.
