If your face shows early signs of aging, you may be weighing whether you should get BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® or RESTALYNE®. But what’s the difference? How does BOTOX work, and how do you know if you should choose dermal fillers vs. BOTOX?

While fillers and BOTOX are both effective in treating wrinkles and lines, they behave somewhat differently and target different types of wrinkles.

BOTOX treats expression lines. These are creases and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. Key treatment areas include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Under-eye wrinkles and crow’s feet
  • Worry lines (horizontal lines between the eyebrows called the 11s)
  • Bunny lines (on the bridge of the nose)
  • Fine lines around the lips

Dermal fillers target fine lines and wrinkles by adding volume. The JUVÉDERM and Restylane product lines are both hyaluronic acid-based fillers that plump and smooth the skin. Common treatment areas include:

Unlike surgical facelifts, BOTOX and dermal fillers are safely tolerated and require little downtime. BOTOX results last 3 to 5 months, while dermal filler results can last up to a year or longer. It’s important to note that patients with more advanced signs of aging achieve better and longer-lasting results with a transformative facelift procedure.
