How Long Does BOTOX® Last?

One of the most common questions our prospective injectables patients ask us is, “how long does BOTOX last?” Committing to BOTOX can be intimidating, especially for first-timers, and many are curious about just how long they can expect to be sporting their results.

BOTOX falls within a category of medications called neuromodulators that minimize wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles you use when changing expressions. (Which is why the wrinkles are sometimes called “expression lines.”) The outcome following BOTOX injections is temporary, and patients often have several questions about what typically happens following their appointments.

Are BOTOX Results Immediate?

No, most patients don’t see changes for several days. Results usually appear within a week to 10 days after the injections. During the week following your appointment, you’ll notice a gradual decrease in your muscle movements in the injected area. You may see some slight bruising, swelling, or redness immediately after getting BOTOX injections.

How Long Do BOTOX Results Last?

Most people see their results last from 3 to 5 months. The product gradually wears off, and you’ll see lines or wrinkles emerge very slowly during those months. Other neuromodulators, such as Dysport® and XEOMIN®, follow the same general timeline but may last longer or shorter. One of the positive aspects of BOTOX wearing off after a few months is that you can feel comfortable trying out the treatment without making a long-term commitment. If you like the results, you can maintain them with periodic treatments.

Can You Make BOTOX Wear Off Faster?

The effects of BOTOX can’t be reversed, unlike most dermal fillers. If you’re unhappy with the results, you’ll need to wait until they naturally disappear. Make sure you choose an experienced injector who understands how much BOTOX is needed to produce the results you want.

How Can I Make My BOTOX Results Last Longer?

The most important skincare habit to adopt for keeping lines and wrinkles at bay is to apply a high-quality sunscreen daily and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Sunscreen should also be a part of your anti-aging skincare routine that includes moisturizers to keep your skin properly hydrated. And, with regular BOTOX use, you may be able to wait longer between appointments as your muscles become used to the product’s effects.

Is It Safe To Use BOTOX Over Many Years?

The safety record of BOTOX, when used for several years, is excellent. There are benefits to doing this, as well, with one study of identical twins showing long-term BOTOX use slowed the onset of signs of aging, even after stopping the injections.
